What is an IP address?

An IP (Internet Protocol) address is a unique label assigned to your device when it connects to the internet. It lets other computers and services know where to send data when you browse or use apps.

There are two main types: IPv4 (e.g. 192.168.1.1) and IPv6 (a longer format that allows many more addresses). Most networks support both; your ISP and router decide which one you use.

Websites can see your IP because your browser sends it with every request. That’s how they can send pages back to you and, with the help of databases, infer approximate location, ISP, and similar information.

An IP can reveal rough location (country, region, city), your internet provider, and sometimes whether you’re on a mobile or home connection. It does not reveal your name, exact address, or other personal details by itself.

For more privacy, some people use VPNs or proxy services, which show a different IP to websites. Using secure connections (HTTPS) and being careful what you share online also helps protect your data.
